Frontend engineering and technical leadership

In my 20+ years across web development, architecture and leadership, I've learned that business-critical platforms rarely fail for lack of code, they fail for lack of direction. I'm Diego Malatesta, and through Quillabs I help companies modernise those platforms and build the teams that keep them moving.

Internal marketing platform

Legacy Platform Rewrite

A legacy internal marketing platform (a fifteen-year-old PHP + jQuery application) rewritten in full, with one hard constraint: hit an 18-month deadline to deliver the MVP. One of two business-critical rewrites delivered for the same client, spanning marketing, content management and e-commerce, owning frontend architecture, planning, estimation and delivery throughout, plus the proofs of concept that guided product direction. Internal tool, so the screens can’t be shown; the case study covers the work.

High-Traffic Betting Platform

A high-traffic sports-betting and casino platform migrated from a legacy application to a Single Page Application, then tuned by a dedicated performance team. Led the migration, and worked as one of the company’s lead frontend developers throughout. Delivered in SCRUM.

Pet Grooming Admin

An admin platform for an independent pet-grooming salon. The owner books appointments and sees them on a calendar, keeps records for each client and their pets (dogs and cats) and tracks the actual cost of every appointment. It replaced a tangle of spreadsheets and a paper diary with a single live view of the day. Built end to end (requirements gathering, architecture, development and delivery), with new features still shipping.

03 / TESTIMONIALS
Diego made the Product team better simply by being part of the conversation. He never just said “yes” to a requirement; he challenged it constructively, spotted implications others missed, flagged technical risks early and proposed better ways to solve the problem. On a large legacy rebuild he constantly found ways to make the technology fit very specific business needs, adapting off-the-shelf software where a costly custom build seemed inevitable. An excellent mentor to junior and senior developers alike, and a genuine bridge between Product, Engineering and the business.
Colm O'S. - Product Owner
I've worked with Diego for five years, through three generations of the company's frontend stack: a Vue admin platform, a Next.js publishing estate, and the monorepo he founded and now leads. He's the rare lead who sets the architecture, standards and roadmap, and then takes the hardest tickets himself: framework migrations, supply-chain hardening, the work nobody volunteers for. He reviews nearly everything the team ships, and his reviews are precise, patient and always explain the reasoning, which is why the whole team's code got better, not just his. He hands out real ownership and backs people up instead of hovering. Deeply strong technically and genuinely good to work with.
